Tasting Belgium-The Netherlands is won by …

België vs. Nederland

On Friday 8 December 2017 The Lambikstoempers played an interland … beer tasting. 🙂

Within a certain beer style they each time tasted a Belgian and Dutch beer next to one another, without knowing which was the Belgian and which was the Dutch beer. The beers were indicated with the numbers 1 and 2, each time served at a random order.

Proeverij België-Nederland

In total there were 5 different beer styles:

  1. Pale ale
  2. Tripel
  3. IPA
  4. Bock
  5. Stout

Per beer style the organizer Kristof Verhasselt tried to place two very similar beers next to one another: the same hops in the pale ale, malted triple, a resin nature in the IPA and a strong coffee taste in the bock and stout. This is to judge as objective as possible which of the two beers – within the same taste experience – was finally judged as the tastiest.

De geproefde bieren

BELGIUM THE NETHERLANDS
Pale Ale Janimal (Vrijstaat Vanmol / Eutropius) 3,3% Hop & Liefde (De Molen) 4,8%
Tripel Waterloo Triple Blond 7 (Brasserie de Waterloo / John Martin) 8,0% Tricky Tripel (Gebrouwen door Vrouwen / Lindeboom) 7,8%
IPA Delta IPA (Brussels Beer Project / Anders!) 6,5% Mooie Nel IPA (Jopen) 6,5%
Bock Four Aces Herfstbock (Het Nest) 7,0% La Trappe Bockbier (Koningshoeven) 7,0%
Stout Café Noir (Keun) 10,0% Espresso Stout (Emelisse) 9,5%

In total there were 18 Lambikstoempers present to taste – among which also Frank Boon and his son Karel! – and the reactions were praising. Most beers – Dutch or Belgian – hit the spot, they needed to vote nonetheless a favourite beer within each category.

Line-up proeverij België-Nederland

And the winner was …?

Within the different categories the next votes were recorded and those beers were the ones that are most liked …

  1. Pale Ale: Hop & Liefde (11 votes) vs. Janimal (7 votes)
  2. Triple: Tricky Tripel (12 votes) vs. Waterloo Triple Blond 7 (6 votes)
  3. IPA: Delta IPA (16 votes) vs. Mooie Nel IPA (2 votes)
  4. Bock: La Trappe Bockbier (15 votes) vs. Four Aces Herfstbock (3 votes)
  5. Stout: Keun Café Noir (9 votes) vs. Espresso Stout (9 votes)

So The Netherlands won in the categories ‘pale ale’, ‘triple’ and ‘bock’, while Belgium only won in the ‘IPA’-round. With the ‘stout’ the opinions were nicely divided.

And also in the general score (all votes counted together)  The Nederlands came out the winner, with in total 49 votes against 41 votes for Belgium. So, Orange on top!

Purpose of the tasting

With the score mentioned above  the goal of the tasting was reached, this was: let people taste Dutch beers unprejudiced to show that our neighbours in the North are doing well at that front.

This result wasn’t promoted, as confirmed by the attendees during and after the tasting: all beers were chosen with a objectively comparable taste within the same beer type. But  maybe the most important of it all: it was a nice, interesting and tasty tasting. 😉

Golden Lambikstoemper 2017 is won by …

Gouden Lambikstoemper 2017 voor Foeders

… Foeders in Amsterdam!

Aided by a, by now, impressive list of horeca businesses, a number of criteria (draughted after many hours of debating) and after an anonymous on site visit, on Sunday 26 November 2017 we, The Lambikstoempers vzw, awarded our Golden Lambikstoemper for the 8th time to a business that, from our perspective, gave the most attention to the Lambic beers in 2017.

And the winner this year is the Dutch Foeders (Ceintuurbaan 257 at 1074 CZ Amsterdam), because of their very nice offer of Lambic beers (Oude Geuze, Oude Kriek …), but also Lambic in its pure form. Foeders is a neighbourhood café and a special beer concept in “De Pijp” at Amsterdam. The building is located next to the “Kabouterhuis” (gnome house) and is reportedly the oldest café of “De Pijp”. Absolutely worth a visit!

Top 3

To complete our top 3 of this year … At the 2nd place: De Kluis at Buizingen, where you can always go for a good glaas of Oude Geuze or Oude Kriek, or Lambic.

The bronze this year went to Restaurant 3 Fonteinen at Beersel, also a guarantee for a very nice offer of spontaneous fermented beers and for a while  now no longer exclusive of brewery 3 Fonteinen!

And finally our honorable mentioning of this year is for Den Herberg at Buizingen. Besides their nice offer of spontaneous fermented beers from the “Pajottenland” and the Valley of the Senne, they also started to experiment with brewing their own Lambic. A very noble initiative. Congratulations to all laureates!

Lambic café list

How do we collect the nominations every year and elect the final winner of our Golden Lambikstoemper? It is based on a, by now, extensive list of Lambic café’s and horeca buisinesses with a special attention for our Pajottenland’s pride of spontaneous fermented beers. And yes, this list is from now on available on-line!

Even more: if you yourself have some suggestions to complete our list, you can always submit them through redactie@lambikstoempers.be. We will try to add your suggestions as soon as possible, of course after an inspection of their offer of spontaneous fermented beers.

Who knows you can determine the winner of our Golden Lambikstoemper 2018, traditionally awarded at our Day of the Old Geuze at Streekproducten Centrum in Halle.
